Australia’s customs laws impose customs duties on all goods imported into Australia. However, many imports attract a “free” rate of duty or are eligible for concessional rates of duty. The amount of duty payable is dependent on the customs tariff duty rate applying to the imported goods, their customs value and whether they are eligible for concessional treatment under free trade agreements or other concessions such as tariff concession orders.
In addition, Australia’s customs laws regulate what goods may be imported into or exported from Australia or the circumstances and conditions in which they may be imported or exported. Not only are there prohibitions on the importation or exportation of certain goods but other goods require governmental approval licences or approvals to be imported or export, which can also include conditions
